Abbeville, South Carolina: 1817. 10 x 7.75", partially printed document completed in manuscript. A "License to work a still for distilling spirits from Domestic Materials" issued to James Baskins of Abbeville, South Carolina in 1817. The document notes that Baskin's still had the capacity of 77 gallons, and it allowed him to distill spirits for a period of two weeks. The document bears a printed stamp reading "9 cents per gallon." It is signed by both the Commissioner of the Revenue, and by the Collector of the Revenue, the latter being "J. Calhoun," possibly John C. Calhoun, who hailed from Abbeville, or a relative of his. Toning and creasing to paper, eight instances of circular ghosting, likely from official seals. Item #9710
