San Francisco: Bethel A.M.E. Church, 1965. 8vo, single folded leaf, 4 pp. Program for a Negro History Week event held in 1965 at the Bethen African Methodist Episcopal Church in San Francisco. The theme for the event was "Negro Pioneers in California History," and the program prints a schedule of events as well as three songs; two of the songs, "LIft Ev'ry Voice and Sing" and "Battle Hymn of the Republic" were sung at the event. The third song, "A Tribute To The Pioneers," by Emma Maxwell, is a seemingly unrecorded song about the African American experience in the old west. It begins "They came out west, those pioneers./The Ones whose skin was tinted black./They came as Fugitives as Slaves,/They came as free men, Stalwart and brave."
