Photo Album Belonging to a U.S. Navy Nurse in New York, Miami Beach, and Idaho

Various Places: 1943 to 1944. String tied photo album bining measuring 11.5 x 9", containing 57 black and white photographs placed into photo corners, most captioned in white ink on album leaves, preceded by manuscript title page reading "Navy Snaps Ensign Ruth Christine Polak U.S. Navy Nurse Corps 1943." The album documents Polak's service in the U.S. Navy Nurse corps during WWII, beginning with a captioned series of images of Polak and other nurses at the U.S. Naval Hospital at St. Albans, Long Island, including photos taken during Polak's first day in the service and images taken in front of the nurses' quarters. This section also contains seven images of a 1943 memorial day parade in St. Albans, including soldiers, hospital corpsman, and WAVES marching in the parade. In fall of 1943, Polak transferred to a hospital in Miami Beach, Florida, and in 1944 she moved to the U.S. Naval Training Station at Farragut Idaho; the second half of the album contains images from these locales--portraits of nurses and soldiers, two images of Naval Day at the 1943 Orange Bowl, shots of Polak ice skating in Idaho, etc. Overall in very good condition, with front hinge of album cracking and hint of soiling to album leaves.
