Photo Album and Scrapbook Compiled by an African American Boy in Berkeley, California
Berkeley, California: 1945 to 1946. Cream string tied scrapbook binding measuring 13.5 x 12.75, with illustration of dog to front cover, containing 106 black and white photographs and 33 ephemeral items, mostly cornered in onto album leaves. The first 50 or so images are accompanied by pencil captions on the album leaves. A scrapbook compiled by Emmett Thompson, an African American boy in Berkeley, California, documenting his time at Burbank Junior High School and Berkeley High School, his boy scout activities, and his family life. Includes images of friends and family posed around their neighborhood or playing sports in local parks, portraits, photos of boy scout outings (Thompson was an active member of Troop 56, which had an African and Asian American membership), as well as images of high school football games (including six 8 x 10" photos of Thompson playing for the team). Much of the ephemera consists of cards and certificates relating to school clubs Thompson was a part of: the "Block 'B' Society", the Berkeley Junior Traffic Police, the Boy Scouts, etc. There are also high school patches, and a 1946 graduation program from Burbank Jr. High School. In fair condition with toning, flaking, and chipping to album leaves, many leaves detached, some contents loose, soiling, spotting and staining to album covers. Item #12715
