Manuscript Cookbook Belonging to Agnes Wieboldt of San Francisco
San Francisco: Circa 1900. Journal binding measuring 8.5 x 7.25", of which 49 pages have been filled out with manuscript recipes in ink. Inscribed "Agnes A. Wieboldt" to front pastedown, together with a San Francisco address. Remnant of additional title label present to front cover, which was originally pasted over an older title label issued with the book. A manuscript cookbook kept by Agnes Wieboldt, a young woman living in San Francisco, born in 1883 to a German father and Irish mother. The book is undated, however it likely stems from prior to Wieboldt's 1902 marriage, after which she became Agnes St. John; in addition, the address on the front pastedown correlates with her address as listed in the 1900 census. A Southern influence runs through the book, which includes recipes for "Three Famous Recipes 'My Southern Mammy's Biscuit One Hundred Years Old," Alabama Biscuits, Southern pound cake, shrimp creole, and Maryland Biscuit. Other recipes include beef broth for invalids, chili sauce, mother's apple sauce cake, and Roman Punch (2 recipes). Covers worn, text block detaching and held onto covers by binding strings only, several groups of pages excised from journal. Item #12714
