Ledger Relating to the Bitting Family of Germanton, North Carolina
Germanton, North Carolina: 1859 to 1868. Ledger binding of marbled boards with leather spine, 7.75 x 6.25", containing 31 pages of ink manuscript as well as many blank pages. A ledger kept by Adison C. Myers of Germanton, Stokes County, North Carolina, documenting the management of land inherited by his stepchildren, Joseph and Susan Bitting, from their deceased father, Samuel L. Bitting. The Bittings were a German American farming family and early settlers in the area. Each entry is headed something like "Adison C. Myers Guardian for Joseph Horatio Bitting & Susan Lewis Bitting minor heirs of S.L. Bitting dec's In account with his said words up to sept. term 1859." The entries record payments to various individuals, taxes, interest, rents received, and reimbursements via "vouchers." There is also an entry related to Susan's schooling at the Salem Female Academy, and two entries relating to enslaved persons, one a payment "for keeping small Negro", the other for "keeping 3 small negroes". Finally, two additional entries, "for keeping 2 woman & 5 children", may also relate to enslaved persons. Apparently the relationship between Adison and his stepchildren was not always positive, as a newspaper article from 1874 notes that Adison "was badly cut by a knife in the hands of his step-son, Joseph Bitting." Toning to pages, six pages with ink faded, mild wear to covers. Item #11787
