Celebration of Calhoun's Birth-Day, 1860. At The College Chapel
[Columbia, South Carolina]: [South Carolina College], [1860]. Broadside measuring 9.75 x 8.5". A rare broadside printing the order of exercises for a celebration of John C. Calhoun's birthday held at South Carolina College (today the University of South Carolina) in March, 1860, on the eve of secession. The celebration began with a prayer, which, according to a manuscript note, was conducted by Augustus B. Longstreet, the college president who suspended half the student body two years prior after they protested to demand a celebration of this day. The broadside also prints a pair of poems written for the occasion, one a celebration of Carolina, the other an ode to Calhoun by professor of Greek Literature W.J. Rivers. We found the latter poem published in an 1857 volume memorializing Calhoun, however we could not find the former poem in publication. Not found in OCLC. Broadside trimmed and chipped along edges with not loss to text, with old glue residue to verso. Item #11633
