Octavo, 9.25 x 6.5", brown cloth with gilt spine titles, 312 pp. Volume one of this newsletter published by the Five Points House of Industry, a charity founded in response to the high rates of crime and prostitution in the Five Points slum of New York City. Includes Volume One, Numbers 1-12 (May, 1857 to April, 1858). The organization was founded in 1851, with the goals of supporting destitute individuals and needy children while Christianizing the population and providing "moral reform." These issues include reports about current and former students with the institution, reports about the institution alms house, moral stories, articles about the impoverished and sinful condition of the neighborhood (one titled "Dance House of the Five Points"), and more. 21 in OCLC for various issues published until the end of the 19th century.
