South Dakota and Montana: 1941. Wooden photo album binding measuring 12.5 x 8”, containing 104 b/w photographs placed into photo corners, as well as four real photo postcards. Each of the images is accompanied by a detailed caption in the margin of and/or on the back of the image. In very good condition with mild soiling to album leaves. A well-annotated photo album compiled by Howard Rosser of CCC Camp 4726 at Chamberlain, South Dakota and Sidney, Montana. The first 71 images document Rosser’s time in South Dakota as a member of a field survey crew, including images of company members (with each identified), the camp, CCC convoy trucks (one captioned “Rode to Two Harbors in above truck. Tipped over with 19 boys in it just before reaching camp”), a work barge, and crew members working on the banks of the Missouri River. This section also contains images from a trip to Two Harbors, Minnesota (possibly to pick up equipment), and it concludes with a series of images of a trip to Fort Meade, SD to pick up a truck. The final 33 images document Rosser’s time in Montana, including images of the company’s move from South Dakota westward, where they stayed in several Montana CCC camps before settling at a camp in Sidney, Montana. Included as well are photos of the camp and barracks, company members climbing on the gateway to the camp, and a series of images of company members and equipment working on a gravel pit. A well-documented album recording CCC activities in the West. Item #10091
